Zangbandであなたが見つけることのできる全てのアイテムのうち、非常に重要なグループがアーティファクトです。アーティファクトは、例えば1つないしそれ以上の能力を増加させたり、維持したり、何らかの耐性や特性を得たりできる追加能力を持ったユニークアイテムです。しばしばアーティファクトは'A'キーでその魔法的能力を発動することができます。これらは、特に魔法が苦手なクラスでは極端に便利です。
アーティファクトには2タイプあります。固定とランダムです。固定アーティファクトはそれぞれ lib/edit/a_info.txt file にエントリーされており、結果としてゲームをプレイするたびに遭遇する可能性があります。一方ランダムアーティファクトはゲームによってランダムな名称とランダムな特性を持って作られます。一旦作られると、あなたがこれと正確に同じ物を他のゲームで見つける確率はないに等しいです。
    (Non-) Preserve Mode
    重要な点の一つは、あなたがゲーム開始時に (non-)preserve mode を選択したかどうかです。non-preserver modeでは、一旦固定アーティファクトが生成されると(それがダンジョン内に落ちていようと、怪物が落としたものであろうと)、それはそのゲーム中2度と再生成されません。これはつまり、もしその階に存在するアーティファクトを見逃してそれを拾う前に他の階に行ってしまうと、それは永久に失われてしまうことを意味します。一方、preserve modeではこの反応は識別済みのアーティファクトにのみ現れます。それゆえその階に存在するアーティファクトを見つけることなく他の階に移動してしまっても、その固定アーティファクトが失われることはなく、再びどこかの階で再生成される可能性があります。
    
    Special feelings
    もし、前の階に十分長く留まっていれば、新しい階に入った時にその階の「雰囲気」を感じとることができます。これはその階に存在する怪物とアイテムの質を反映しています。雰囲気については'Town and Dungeon'のセクションでより詳細に議論しています。感じ取る雰囲気の中には'You have a special feeling about this level'という特別な雰囲気があります。これは、non-preserve modeでプレイしている時のみ現れる雰囲気であり、その階に怪物の巣、地下室かアーティファクトがあることを示しています。アーティファクトは必ず特別な雰囲気を呼びますが、怪物の巣や地下室はいつもそういうわけではなく、特に深い階層では特別な雰囲気を呼ぶことは稀です。非常に深い階では、特別な雰囲気はほぼ間違いなくアーティファクトの存在を意味します。
    
注意:non-preserve modeでは、特別な雰囲気が感じられなかったにも関わらずアーティファクトを見つけることがありますが、これは常に怪物がアーティファクトを落とした結果です。
    The '~' Command
    '~'キーを押すことで、アーティファクトに関するオプションを選択できます。ここでは今までに見つかった固定アーティファクトを見ることができます。non-preserve modeでは、見逃してしまったアーティファクトも表示されます。しかしこの場合、現在いる階にあってまだ見つけていない固定アーティファクトについては表示されません。結果、このコマンドは街で使うのが一番である、ということになります。
